Sorry but in your example, everyone is still paying the same amount.

I personally don't like eating out because of tips. I also don't pick up food on my way home too because it's awkward while picking up and they basically have their hand out for a tip.

Some ridiculous tips
-haircuts and hair color. If I spend $300+ on color, this should not need a tip! A few of my cousins are hairstylists and they make 150k+ in their smaller city (well deserved, but no tips needed)
-counter service. They're not paid a tipped wage. They're paid a standard wage.
-uber eats/food delivery. If there's a service charge, a tip shouldn't be needed. Their incentive for getting the food to you timely should be keeping their job.
-laser hair removal or any sort of beauty treatment.

Contrary to what many think, but most restaurants aren't swimming in profits and margins are razor thin.

It does seem like there is heavy tip inflation and you're correct, that a more expensive meal, doesn't mean the server is working harder. We already eat out less. I do like eating out and not having to prep, cook and clean sometimes, but restaurants are really overpriced and the food often isn't that great. With a little effort, it's not hard to make a good meal at home, for a fraction of the price of eating out.

And tips were 10% for decades. It is only recently that folks started pressuring people higher and higher and calling them cheap. But there was no need to raise the percentage when prices also were going up due to inflation of fertilizer prices, etc. during COVID. The server is not working harder and they still were receiving additional $.

I agree with this. 20% is plenty IMHO, at a nicer restaurant. I’m a more generous tipper, if the service warrants it, at a place like Waffle House.

I tip 20%, but I think it would be good to just pay a fixed amount. There's no reason why I should tip based on the check total when there is no extra work for a $40 plate vs. a $15 plate.

Having lived in a non tipping country, it’s very nice and reduces a lot of the stress of life. It’s not just restaurant servers. It’s the uber guy, baristas, pizza delivery, valet, heck here were expected to tip our trash guy. The whole system is ridiculous but it’s the system we live in. I tip 20% on every meal. If the service is bad I don’t go back. I’m very selective about who else I tip.
