First kid, first bike: New from REI
First kid, second/third/forth bikes: used from craigslist or FB marketplace, then sold via the same when outgrown or needed to upgrade.

DO NOT buy from: big box stores (target, walmart), or even Dick's.

DO buy from: local bike shops (used), Phoenix Bikes Co-op in Arlington, brand names only from FB or craigslist if you know how to measure the bike and know what brands come with first class QUALITY components, that are repairable (unlike some of those from WMT and TGT)

Used. Facebook Marketplace or local listserves. There is zero value in buying a new bike.

Bought an REI brand bike and then a woom bike from REI.

While pricey the woom is very light weight which helped my child learn.

I’ve gotten all 3 of DS bikes as he’s grown from FB marketplace, all Trek. I think I paid $50, $50 and $100. The most recent one I did have to put new tires on, but he’s almost at the biggest size now so still a really good deal. The first 2 I sold for what I paid, definitely recommend going that direction.
