Truly impossible to tell on those things alone.

We don’t discuss money at work, but people will talk about their neighborhoods, what schools they send their kids to, and our parking lot looks like a new car dealership! So either everyone is doing well or keeping up appearances.

You live in bad neighborhood because you want to hide your wealth from your coworkers?
What a sad way to live.

You think all middle class neighborhoods are bad? That says more about you than anything. And it’s people like you we prefer not to live near, frankly.

Here! We also have a decent Matty Healy thread going.

So don't you love that Sign of the Times kinda got a reboot with Hail Mary Project?
I feel like it's a cover but apparently it's an original with a lot of 70s influences.

I discuss money at work but am a biglaw associate where we all make lockstep compensation and are virtually all the breadwinners.

I'm an immigrant ( female) in my 50s and have more money saved than my coworkers. How do I know that? Through their conversations to each other. They are older than me ( some by 5, 10 or even 19 years), yet they have car loans, mortgages, bills etc. If they only knew that I have zero debt, not even a mortgage and over 7 figures in retirement accounts. I could lose a job and not worry about it much, as I have saved for a couple of years in my brokerage account to bridge me to retirement age ( when I can start drawing SSN, 401K, pension).

Yup, 100%. I'm in a remote first environment and this is why I use a virtual background and never get specific on vacation spots or where I live.

I'm normally super outgoing, but I've learned my lesson - the hard way.

When VA was debating the new income and investment tax brackets (relevant to RSU comp) it came up on my team at work but that’s only because comp is mostly standardized / very public by level so everyone knew everyone else was also clearing $600K or more.

That’s the only time it’s come up in my career though.

I can't imagine discussing money at work, and I've never heard anyone do it. It doesn't mean I don't care about it or that I am not an equal partner when it comes to financial decisions...

Definitely don’t discuss money at work. I work at a school, and we live in a middle class home but my husband is a law firm partner. We hide our wealth significantly.

I never discuss money with coworkers. With friends we may discuss investing but not mention dollars.

+1 Also it's a bit awkward when real estate comes up since I'm lucky to have purchased a house in the mid-90s, at the bottom of the market.
