I think it's an interesting question. A lot of the fashion influencer stuff imo does not even look very good. It tries too hard to put pieces together and ends up looking generic and cheap even with high end pieces. They are missing sprezzatura.

Men have changed significantly more than women. In the 50s, men wore the classic shirt, tie and suit-like pants. Even to mow the grass after work.

People ate way less back then and also smoked like chimneys.

The men haven't change much except they no longer all wear hats.

I wouldn't want to go back to those clothes unless I was going to a costume party. Uncomfortable heels all the time, pantyhose, hats and gloves. What a PITA. You can still get nice skirts and blouses if that's your thing.

Women almost always wore dresses, which is the easiest way to pull together a look because its one garment. They probably only owned 2-3 pairs of shoes and purses.

Men wore pants, shirt, jacket.

These are the foundations of a capsule wardrobe. Basic, quality coordinating pieces that create outfits.

Not sure. I learned from my mom and aunts who learned it from their mom. My dad's mom was also a fashion plate and I own some of her things and wear them occasionally (they are vintage so delicate so I treat them carefully). These women look/looked good. I am considered stylish by most. I know what colors and shapes work for me and my body, get things tailored for the best fit and so on. I do not wear beige and grays or greige. I also am Black, if it matters.

Also girdles. Women wore them even when they were in the early stages of pregnancy.

I think the rise of depression among all age groups correlates. If mom/dad is a wreck and doesn’t teach you how to brush your hair and sends you to school in wrinkled pajamas when exactly will the lightbulb go off and you start to put in effort?
