We understand that my kid needs to send Va Tech an email to withdraw from Va Tech, but how soon after can he commit to this other school? Does he need to wait until Va Tech emails back confirming the withdrawal? My kid wants to do the right thing. He knows about the Common App agreement he checked off that he should not commit to more than 1 school.

This happens with kids coming off the waitlist all the time. It's not a big deal as long as you actually withdraw timely.

Accept second school, make sure everything is confirmed then release from VT. This really isn’t any different than getting off waitlist from somewhere and then withdrawing from a school you previously committed to attend. Happens all the time.

Just like you wouldn’t quit your job before you had signed paperwork for the next offer, you don’t need to withdraw from VT before accepting the second school. You just have to withdraw as soon as all the T’s are crossed and I’s are dotted.

I saw your post on FB, just withdraw from VT before 5/1, which is why they give a refund of your deposit. We are in the same situation- son completely changed his major and is now going to another school. Don’t worry!

DS is in a similar situation with another school. It’s a large public university out of state. He was positive he wanted to commit there but was having second thoughts in recent weeks. The school he now wants to attend is the polar opposite. As a parent I was having major concerns about the school myself, so it’s actually a relief. We had him confirm his enrollment and merit aid with the new school and make his deposit last week. This week he will call the office of admissions for the first school to ask about the process for withdrawing. I don’t think this is an unusual situation at large schools.

Think of all the kids that get off wait lists. It's no big deal. Agree I would accept school 2 first. You are not hurting anyone for those few days

Do not withdraw until the other college is completely sorted out - avoid making any assumptions and instead verify.

OP if you are so nervous, why don’t you ask the college counselor instead of the internet? I don’t understand why anyone would come here for this advice.

Where is he going instead?

I already posted about my kid doing this when they got off the waitlist. You’re overthinking it. They were dealing with a T15 and an Ivy, no way in the world we would have declined and then committed in that order.
