This is OP coming back to report. I did finish this book.
Yes, it can be 100 pages shorter and yes, it picks up after the artist is gone. It satisfied my quest for family drama but it felt like every character seemed to have the worst human qualities. And no, it is way more than showing “everyone is flawed.”
Overall I say meh. Pachinko and Jane Smiley’s trilogy of Langdon family are way better.

I was really looking forward to this book, but I am not enjoying it at all. I felt so optimistic even through the first bumps but I'm now seventy pages in and just can't do it. Disappointing.

Ha! I just read it last week on spring break and I was SO close to quitting halfway. Honestly only continued because it was the only book I had on the plane home. The first half was excruciating, everyone was just incredibly boring, self-centered, and unlikable.

I did end up liking the second half a lot more. Like others said, once the artist was gone it picks up and has a decent ending. Way too long, though, and not sure it was worth the time investment. I'd never have put the time in to finish it if I wasn't on vacation.
