bu, bc, tufts are all better than umass in terms of prestige and maybe recruiting for the first job. How much better and if it’s worth it is based on your location and income level. Is your kid from Wellesley and are you going to be embarrassed saying he goes to umass? Is 100k a stretch? For most it is. If it’s painful to pay 100k a year for college then don’t and make him go to umass. He will be fine. BU has top engineering and business, but both of those paths at umass will also lead to a job. I would not pay for a degree from bu/bc/tufts over umass for any major like sociology, communications, teaching etc unless you have money coming out your ears.

My company is based out of Boston and I work with a fair number of alums. They seem to be doing fine but no different professionally than the people we work with that went to UMass and UConn. A couple of them have made comments about student loans. If you make <500k, I wouldn’t spend 100k a year on BU. If you make >500k, I would consider it if it was your kid’s dream school.

My office has to take a BU intern or two every year.

I make it a point to interview and bring in people from Wellesley, Amherst, Georgetown, NESCAC etc for our other interns…

BU really is a state school with a private school price tag.

There is a gargantuan gap in median student quality

Zoomass is more than comparable to BU

Yes, he will most likely have to go to grad school as well.

Most who do apply to BU can either afford it or receive generous financial aid.

Nephew graduated from BU 2 years ago. Majored in finance at the B school. Great experience, networked with profs, enjoyed Boston, hockey, etc. Now working in IB in nyc. He was really happy there. And it was tough with covid for a year. He moved into off campus housing due to covid restrictions but his girlfriend stayed in on campus housing for all 4 years. Is it worth it? Depends on your finances and goals and your kid.
