You can be a power couple if one has a career and the other has a lot of power and clout in philanthropy circles or something of that sort. One spouse can be on boards and gala committees etc... - meaning they have a presence.

She has always been a hyperactive people connector. She's had multiple jobs, I don't know if we could call them careers. She's one of the few women helicopter pilots (with Angelina Jolie). She's clearly energetic and driven and she's intelligent but not academic. I think of a “power couple” as two people who are BOTH extremely accomplished, professionally powerful in their own right. Top trial lawyer + politician. Famous heart transplant surgeon + famous journalist. Etc etc.

It's only "dragging women down" if you aspire to have the NYT call you part of a power couple.

By that definition, any married billionaire and spouse = power couple

Exactly. Rich billionaire plus mousy wife you’ve never heard of who doesn’t work….. not a power couple, even if she gets to wield power because of his money.

I would even say Trump and Melanie aren’t a power couple because she’s never done anything of note or of worth other than lie down.

I hate Sanchez but there does seem to be something different about her vs Melanie. She had her own job and was scrambling hard to climb the social and money ladder before she met bezos, and had a lot of social and money capital before she married him. So even though she’s a gold digger, and acquired a lot more power through him, she’s probably still a contributor to their power couple status.

She's basically a very high end hooker.

I 100% agree that most powerful / successful men were able to get there due in key part to the support of their wife.

But that's not what the term "power couple" means. It means a couple where both in their own right are a big deal. Frankly I think that model works best for couples without kids since both parents going full bore at their jobs is not a good scenario for raising children.
