Can anyone recommend schools with easy, inexpensive access to a golf course? My kid loves to play, not for networking reasons, just for the outdoor sports fun. He asks about this on every college visit!

Oh geez. Now sports are a political issue? Let me guess, your kid won’t apply to any school in the south.

My daughter had zero point zero interest in any school in the south and she's a fantastic golfer. Has clubs with her at school. Plays at least once a week when weather allows

I agree that it depends on how close the course is, but if you can walk there like you said, def bring them. It's a great way to make friends.

golf and tennis are both pretty co-ed now.

Not in the networking on the golf course.

100% untrue. I swear you're all living in 1990

That's not true. Where are you getting your information? 1970?

I'm a female member of a country club and can assure you that women network and advance their careers in these sports as well. It is 100% a thing with women too.

It's going to be school-dependent, particularly freshman year (dorm, no car). Depends on how accessible the course is to campus.

I learned freshman year on my college course - dorm hall was randomly full of golfers. I have not heard of many who share that experience, though.

Yes, he brings them up in the warmer months. My husband and I are not golfers, but it’s become a nice hobby for my son and his friends.
Agree with other PPs….its a healthy activity.

Our son plays 4-5x a week. For the last 3 years his birthday present has been a yearly membership at a course near campus.

Are you aware females also play golf?

Yes. They’ll be playing at St Andrews next year.

It’s something like $300/yr for unlimited golf at the Old Course and all of their affiliates.

I took intro to golf at Duke spring of senior year. It was great. Course is walking distance from the main campus and nice and cheap for students. Though that was back in the 90s when everyone at Duke wasn’t a big stress case.

Mine does! He joined the (very non - competitive) club team which got him some kind of good deal at local course. He’s in New England so the actual golfable weather is pretty brief, mostly just couple months of fall semester, but he was glad to have his clubs

My kid got to school freshman year and immediately asked us to ship him his clubs. Would walk with his roommates to a nearby course and eventually joined the club golf team. He keeps them under his bed.

I agree. Take the clubs. It’s a good reason to spend time away from the phone and a way to meet other people.
