I miss my kids being these ages. They are pretty great teenagers but they just don’t have that lighthearted fun and natural joy (and adoration of parents!) that younger kids have. You will have fun anywhere you go OP.

We really liked Puerto Rico, Philadelphia (Legoland and Franklin Institute in the winter), and NYC.
We've enjoyed a couple other trips with grandparents and siblings but I think the destination was less appealing to them than being in a big rental with family.

Hawaii (I'd wait until closer to age 10), Olympic National Park if you like nature/hiking (book lodging at a couple different places in the park so you are not spending all your time driving)

We went to both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh when ours were that age. I feel like the museums in those two cities are way better than DC for kids.

As you can see OP, kids this age will have fun ANYWHERE, as long you plan a trip with a variety of activities, Junior Rangers, etc.

San Diego and then Highway 1 up to San Francisco. San Diego has legoland, an aircraft carrier, and a cool zoo. And then highway 1 has elephant seals, Hearst Castle, Big Sur, Carmel Beach, Monterey aquarium and tons of cool hikes and stuff to do on the way to the Golden Gate Bridge. Totally great for 6-10.
