I know only one Patrick and nobody calls him Pat.

Paddy is not ok outside of an Irish-influenced community. It's a movie character name.

Rick sounds good as a nn.

The Hispanic boys are all Mateo.

Ha, this reminds me of when I was in a seven student Latin class in college and four of the seven were named Paul.

I don’t think it needs a nickname. In my son’s class the different Patricks all get called by their last names to differentiate them. So he’ll come home and tell me “Kelly and Madigan played ball with me” and I’m like who? “Two of the Patricks.” My friends kid is the same age in the local public school and says there are zero Patricks.

I had this on my list for my boy born in 2025 but we ultimately went with another name because we didn't love Pat as a nickname. Patrick felt like a name that was "on sale" almost because despite being a name that everyone knows and recognizes it isn't all that popular these days. That probably depends on your circles though. As a PP said, if you run in Irish Catholic circles or go to those kinds of schools your experience will be different I suspect.
I would assume youre Catholic. So just know that will be people’s assumption if you care. Nicknames arent great for a young child. Pat or Paddy.
Or Fat Pat 😕

I love it, but DH vetoed because we are both from Irish Catholic families and wanted to branch out from the common family names.

Definitely not too common for kids now where I live, but I know of one!

It's great. I'm Irish Catholic, so I know plenty of guys named Patrick. In my experience, all of them under age 25 go by Patrick.
