I thought 4pm. Anybody planning to drop out at 3:59PM?

I’d love to hear the story behind that withdraw.

We withdrew. We weren't allowed to take honors or AP next school year so it became abundantly clear that the plan for my child was to finish in the bottom half of the class. It was pointless for us to pay for private school to end up with no better matriculation options than a good public school. The extra month would have been welcome because the decision felt rushed.

Good for you. I hope the school didn’t fill your child’s spot.

Actually I don't think it has been June for decades, because I vividly remember it being in lock step with new student acceptances. I want to say we were pushed to commit early spring before the letters came out (March?) between winter and fall sports. We had about a month to fully commit. We all followed the admissions schedule because we get our contracts at check in about 2 weeks before letters went out and everyone would try to call their parents to get them to come ASAP to sign and give the deposit check because classes could be chosen in the order contracts were received. There was a late fee after admissions letters went out and classes were chosen in April and they assumed you had forfeited your spot if it was not returned by that point. You could commit after that point only if they hadn't gotten someone from the waitlist to take your spot.

As a type A kid, it was really stressful 😂

Coordinating the application and decision calendar helps families. Schools are not required to follow the AISGW guidelines, but most if not all do, most of the time. Last year a couple schools actually had different dates for notification, probably because of how spring break fell on the calendar.

If you’d really like to have to make a decision when school A demands a deposit 3 weeks before school B notifies of decisions and your preferred school C wants a signed contract and full-tuition due date just a week later, good luck with that insanity.

+1. The guideline was set by the local association, not the schools. Families (more than the schools) benefit from a single coordinated date to avoid the headache PP described. I also much prefer May 1 because it means the waitlist shuffle will likely end before the end of the school year, and with enough time to visit if you get off a WL.

Right?! There is a difference between anti-competitive behavior and basic market coordination. A shared deadline makes the process more transparent and prevents families from holding multiple spots, which actually improves movement for everyone. Additionally colleges and public schools use the May 1st deadline so it isn't like any option is being excluded. One person wishing they had more time to make a decision doesn't make the deadline any less valid...

Complain all you want. You will stay.

With the elimination of large chunks of federal work force, there are several slots popping up in private schools after the admission cycle.

That was more of a thing last year, with the DOGE slash-and-burn techniques last spring.
