What is covered depends on your specific insurance. My dental plan has three tiers and for years I just had the lowest. I switched from the lowest to the highest tier because some of the implant work would be covered (more than half of the final amount). The timing worked out because I broke the tooth in the fall shortly before open season enrollment for the next year started, and due to the timing and separate billing for different phases the bulk of the work would be in the following year and therefore covered. (Plus dentist said both my kids should have wisdom teeth removed, which would be covered fully in highest tier plan.)
