Update…the kid who started clarinet in 4th grade during virtual education found out this week he will be a section lead next year in marching band, as a 10th grader. A lot of it has to do with the child’s willingness to put in practice outside of school. Since elementary school, he’s learned to play 9 instruments. Anything is possible if the child is willing.

Our school leads go by favorites not skill. Private lessons help a lot.

It’s offered at every school in 4 and 5th but the instruments offered varies.

yes, this! If nothing else, it's just a fun diversion from academics. Our school had an end of year band and orchestra concert for 4th and 5th graders. And you know what? they weren't great....but they played notes, it was cute, kids had fun, and parents were proud. That's all that matters. If your kid is really into instrumental music and wants to progress, then outside lessons are a must. But elementary school IM in and of itself doesn't require supplementation.
