Jets are flying bombs. They are inherently dangerous. The problem is too much air travel clogging the skies and the airports.

What? There has to have been another way...the fact that the fire truck asked permission to cross the runway indicates they took the time to find out.

+1 It was possible to hold up the landing plane, or the next landing plane, until the fire truck got safely across.

Woulda, coulda. The plane was landing. Plane has right of way. The truck driver should have intuitively waited despite tower communication. Situational awareness deficiency? I hope he is ok but all he had to do is wait. The pilots applied heavy braking and reverse thrust after the impact and saved passengers lives. They died, many injured passengers. One lone truck driver. Trolley problem.

I imagine US airports are still some of the safest in the world but they need to be even safer.

Oh give me a break!!
The U.S. air traffic controllers are working without pay!! They are doing a stressful job without pay, adding to their stress. Most people can't survive without a single paycheck. They have child care, mortgages, etc. to pay, and missing a paycheck is enormously stressful. Air traffic controllers are always overworked, understaffed, a crazily stressful job made even more stressful by the %$&# Republicans who refuse to put even the most basic limits on ICE!!!

This is the GOP's fault. The families of those pilots should sue the GOP for causing this totally unnecessary accident!!

ATC is under DOT and THEY ARE BEING PAID. So, figure out the facts before you go into hysterics.

I’d respect you more if you were flipping out about how we have a reality tv weirdo running the DOT and about how the Elon bros cancelled the ATC upgrades.

Correct atcs are being paid right now. Not sure why this thread is in the political section.

There are no statements in the media that the plane on the ground was about to explode. It had a odor.

Based on the audio, the ATC either forgot or wasn't unaware that a plane was landing on the same runway that the firetruck asked permission to cross, or he had poor judgement. It was at 11:30 pm at night.

I wonder how long the ATC had been on duty, operating the tower short-handed, feeling under the weather, etc.

Air traffic controller’s audio indicates they are at fault.
I haven’t travelled to the US from Canada for more than 2 years now. It doesn’t feel safe for many reasons.

DHS isn't being paid. The FAA is being paid.
ATC staffing is a long-term problem, and no recent President or Transportation Secretary has done much about it.

In fact you are incorrect. Biden had increased the pipeline to address this shortage. Then Trump fired them all because…DEI.

Did he actually fire them? Or just kill the programs?

All of the above and then a bunch quit.

Article from Feb 2025
https://whyy.org/articles/trump-fires-faa-air-traffic-control/

The Trump administration has begun firing several hundred Federal Aviation Administration employees, upending staff on a busy air travel weekend and just weeks after a January fatal mid-air collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Probationary workers were targeted in late night emails Friday notifying them they had been fired, David Spero, president of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists union, said in a statement.
The impacted workers include personnel hired for FAA radar, landing and navigational aid maintenance, one air traffic controller told the Associated Press. The air traffic controller was not authorized to talk to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Do MAGAs deplane if their pilot isn't white?

+1.

And really those that decided to slash government workers out of spite, that comprised the safety of others, should be in prison!!

The risks were not equal. The plane on the ground had an odor. The risk of that plane exploding was lower than two vehicles colliding. It was a stupid decision to let the truck cross the runway at the moment a plane was landing, and your comment is also stupid.
