My 2025 hs grad was waitlisted for A&S at UVA and seriously considered the Year in
Wise program, but in the end chose another school and is very happy. The YIW program seems great for those who Really want UVA and are willing to take an alternate path to Charlottesville, but that can be an obstacle for many 18 year olds who don’t want to transfer to another campus after 1 year. Still, it’s a great option for some students. The biggest concern DD had was uncertainty over how AP credits would be handled at UVA. DD was able to have Sophomore status at her university with the possibility of graduating early (and saving money) or pursuing a double major or accelerated masters program.

There is a way to know that there is a higher chance of getting off the waitlist from OOS than from NoVa.

I have been amazed at the quality of the kids they WL. I guess there are just too many great kids to admit from Nova.

Why? It seems like a great program. There is a cohort of kids at Wise who are heading to UVA, so you have a peer group. You get to start college in a smaller more supportive environment. Then when you move to UVA, you move with a group, so you already have friends.

No direct experience but we know a lot of kids who were WL'ed at UVA. None of them got off the WL. One took the UVA Wise offer though.

(I'm also not sure how many stayed on the WL until the bitter end, or moved on to another choice.)

No, you can’t apply mcintire with this option. It stated in the offer.
Last year my DD declined the offer and keep on the uva waitlist. Supper lucky, off the waitlist at the early July. There is still hope, good luck!

Yes.
Year in Wise is a gem program.

Admission was offered to 3% of waitlisted student last year.

They give you numbers so you can see how it went in pst years.

There was definitely some movement last year but none of our friends got off of it. They were excellent candidates too. It’s a very low percentage usually of those that get off of it.

I would encourage your child to move on, get excited about the next school, and if things change with the waitlist later on, it will be a fun surprise.
