That’s a weird way of thinking. Lots of kids apply to lots of schools that they don’t necessarily want to go to. And they get into some and not others.

Uh huh. Sure.

You sound like you haven’t gone through this yet. You’ll see.

Yes, I have. And more than once. My kids applied to plenty of schools that they knew they’d get into and did but never really would have wanted to go to—but not to any that they didn’t think they’d get into but didn’t want to go to anyway. Because that’s really weird and a waste of time.

Thanks for making the universal assertion that anyone applying to UVA as an afterthought isn't going to get into the school. That's highly data-driven of you! Kids apply to schools they don't really want to go to ... as you just noted that your kids did.

Kids are applying to anywhere between 12 and 20 schools. They're applying to reach schools, target schools, and safety schools. You'd be a buffoon to think that they aren't applying to schools they have no intention of going to, even if it is UVA. A kid that's applying to every single HYPSM or a ultra high stats/high EC value kid is certainly NOT aiming for UVA.

Nope. You don’t sound defensive at all.

DP. I don’t think it’s weird at all. A lot of kids have no idea where they want to go in the fall of senior year, so they throw a few “what the heck” apps out there, especially if there are no supplements.

I was one who said that and my child legitimately isn't going to college in VA. She also applied to several other schools she didn't want to go to, but did because we strongly advised her to- and after visiting, she became much more interested in them. Keeping options open and all...

Idk if my kid would have gotten in or not because UVA is a tough admit in our area, but we had no defensive thinking going on. UVA was just not high on his list. It hovered at the bottom, had come off but went back on when they removed supplementals. He pulled his EA app to UVA when he got into his top choice ED- a highly selective school with a lower admit rate than UVA.

Uh huh. You’re not defensive. Nope.

That is not how yield works.

Isn’t it? Kids who are less interested are less likely to attend.

My kid got into UVA EA and also into other schools she has no intention of going to. They can only pick one.

Except # applications and acceptance rate aren't used in the rankings, particularly not used in US News Rankings.
