Yes - you can always ask for extenuating circumstances, but keep in mind that your spot is taking up the spot of someone trying to get in. They usually don't hold it for long.

It doesn’t hurt to ask, but I think it’s unlikely that a school would extend the deadline. They want to figure out their yield as soon as possible and move to the waitlist if necessary. Plus, some parents are willing to put a deposit and lose it if necessary. If you have a really good reason and are asking for a short extension, they probably would be more willing.

yes. You have until May 1 to back out. You will lose the deposit, but nothing further. After that, you'll be on the hook for the full tuition.

However, read the contract carefully. This is typical but not universal. Especially if you are not in the DC area.
