Agree that admitted students' day lacked energy. Student/advisor panels clearly explained academic opportunities well but DS did not feel anyone was actually supporting anyone else, all grinding away individually. No sense of community at all. Said he wouldn't even keep considering it w/o in-state tuition benefit.

My kid had exact same experience last year. Ruled off the list. They really made us feel like they could not care if he enrolled or not.

Kind of difficult for a big state university to accomplish. You were accepted. Constant reinforcement should definitely look elsewhere as yours did.

My kid had exact same experience last year. Ruled off the list. They really made us feel like they could not care if he enrolled or not.

Hey OP, you should enroll your child and withdraw after May1. That way, "someone else who is more focused on actual academics and student life" won't get "snapped up" - just to piss off parent of child that probably got rejected from Maryland.

Everyone, especially exhausted teens, would like to feel wanted.

My kid chose a SLAC in part because she values individual attention and personalized treatment.


Wallflowers who need hand-holding and value it over opportunities and excellence should absolutely avoid research-focused state flagships that are a few Metro stops away from Washington, DC.

This happens every year at UMd. My kid never toured before he actually started there. There won’t be enough spots, more will not be added. Can you go to Maryland day? That’s open to public and you’ll see a ton of

Will say one kid enrolls UMd is very good at communicating with parents
