PP here. Sorry I assumed it was for your daughter, but I see you didn't indicate either way. Same situation for the boys' team, though.

At these schools there is typically one "varsity" team, no Freshman or JV. At least that is the case at Madison, which runs a similar level tennis team to Oakton. So they will have some spots opening up for Freshman, but not many. Try to have your daughter attend the "green days" which is informal practice with previous years' players (August -October). There, she can meet the coaches. For now, have her continue with lessons, ask around if any Oakton HS players would want to hit balls around during the summer (you might have to pay them) and see if Oakton hosts a summer tennis camp for rising 9th graders.

it all depends on the school. why don't you ask parents who send their kids to that school?

I am very familiar with tennis. There are very few POC that play professional tennis. That’s why it was such a big deal when the Williams sister came onto the scene.

We aren’t talking pro tennis. Pro tennis players aren’t wasting time on their high school teams in teen yrs. They are at some virtual high school and at tennis academies.

All the top high school teams are predominantly Asian or Indian kids. Most don’t play professional tennis bc they are going to top colleges and med school, duh.

Uh no . Individual sports like this and golf are very popular in the Asian communities.

These kind of sports are the easiest ones to convert money into athletic prowess; on a team sport, you have the risk of a coach who will not play your kid (and I hear stories of racial discrimination as well in starters etc)

At Oakton its tough.

Tennis is a historically predominantly white, elitist, and expensive sport with roots in 19th-century upper-class culture, featuring 72.9% white professional players.

Also - the top players at Oakton are almost all east or south Asian, so not sure what that PP was talking about re: white kids.

Like everything else at Oakton, it's very competitive.
