I just started using Clairol's Nice and Easy Root Kit and have been so happy for it. I kept it on for closer to 30 minutes and I also find it did not dry out my hair. I had tried Madison Reed before but for whatever reason that did not work as well on my hair. Now I will go 6-8 weeks before going for salon color.

I get my hair professionally colored all over every 6-9 mos., then touch up my gray roots every 2-3 wks. using a product specifically created for this.

I love it as it does a fantastic job of covering my stubborn grays (!), only comes w/enough hair color needed for your roots and even comes w/a color brush to apply color effectively.
My only complaint is that it does not come w/an after-color hair conditioner.

But at under $10 a box it really makes covering my gray roots simple ➕ affordable!

I use the spray from the drug store.

Dark hair here. I use Clairol Natural Instincts in between salon visits for the roots/temples. Doesn't cause issues with salon color, and I feel like I can be less careful about it than I would need to be with a permanent at home color. I leave the color on longer than it says, I usually do 30 mins.

For you Madison Reed people -- do you go there for your regular color too? Or just the root touch ups between your actual colorist? Can they handle highlighted hair? Does your regular colorist know and endorse you going there?

I’ve never done it. But it’s 45$ every 6 weeks. So you’d have to time it right to have it make sense between your normal person. I’ve only used Madison Reed root touch up powder and it’ok. But thinking of doing above bc I hate seeing my roots!!! Want to hear from someone first hand as well

This is where the Tarte root touch up stick was so good. It was just for daily use but really did the trick. Alas, it has been discontinued.

I use Just for Men in medium brown and a clean mascara spoolie to paint mine. Also tint my brows and lashes this way. Works like a charm and is very cheap.

I use Clairol root touch up every 6 weeks, at the three week point after the salon. Been happy with it.

I haven't had good luck with at home root touch ups. I never get good coverage. Could just be me. So now I go to the Madison Reed salon to get my roots done in between more expensive coloring (balayage). It's my middle ground.
