I want to say this with compassion. If you re-read what you wrote the vast majority of what you focused on was the tattoos, not the lying. I think people are just responding to what you highlighted in your own narrative.

Seriously if they are truly poor tattoo art the kid will find out when others with good tats tell them theirs are bad. They can get them modified or lasered off when they earn enough money for that. Lots of laser places around.

The crux of the issue is that he lied. That’s what I would focus on in discussions with him and would require him to pay back the money.

I don’t care for tattoos either but once they’re 18, it’s really up to them. It’s fine to be disappointed in the choice but he did not do this to YOU or to get back at you. He just likes something that you don’t.

Get a grip. If you’re not a troll, the issue you have is that he lied about the money for the refrigerator to get the tattoos. That’s definitely something to be very concerned, saddened and angry about. The reaction to that for me would be related to repayment of the conned funds, and different financial arrangements going forward.

I’m so sorry, op. That’s terrible he lied to you, and abused himself.
I’d be livid, but then I’d set boundaries (no more allowance or money sent), set up a payment schedule to get money back, and not believe everything he says at face value.
Then, I’d respond with compassion. Clearly, something is going on that is hurting him.See if he will talk to you about it so he can get help.

I hate tattoos but don’t talk about it in front of my children. Occasionally I make comments about how they are common. Your kids are separate beings from yourself and you need to accept that they will make different decisions from you.
