My kids know to select solid colors that are flattering to their skin color. Not necessarily new, not necessarily expensive. But something that fits well and is smart looking. Not very fashion-forward either.

No! If you “need” something “new,” check out your local Buy Nothing group or thrift store. Stop buying new shit!

Not exactly, but we do keep it in mind when buying new back-to-school clothes.

We also buy new outfits. I like to do new first day of school outfits too. Spring picture day was always fun--so cute in their Easter dresses/suits.

I buy boys' button down shirts each year when I find a good sale and my sons never wear them so there is always a new shirt in the closet for picture day!

When I do my BTS shopping I usually buy one or two things that are good for first day of school pictures and/or school portraits. Sometimes I will pick a few things and then ask my kids to look at the open tabs and choose which one they like best. They are still pretty young though.

Nope. My kids love clothes so they generally dress "nice" anyway. I do try and make sure I brush their hair thoroughly but that's it.

This. We don’t purchase the pictures, but I love looking through the yearbooks where you can see which kids dressed themselves and how their personalities shine through. One of mine was especially attracted to a particular sports jersey, and we joked that he would try and squeeze into it for his senior portrait.

No but we buy a few nice outfits in the fall and the spring for holidays so my kids just wear that for class pictures or whatever casual school clothes they want

If you're just doing senior pictures offered by a public school, it's quite typical they'll be wearing clothes provided by the photographer (black drape or tux, cap and gown).

Nope. The Lifetouch juggernaut continues its consolidation of the industry. They do the regular picture day for K-12. For seniors, they have a separate portraits division with a different name (Prestige Portraits). So you schedule an offsite with a sitting fee of about $25. Then they do multiple poses. I don't think any of them had cap and gown poses. The packages cost more than regular picture day.

I basically don't spend money on personal indulgences except for photos. I do take pleasure in better quality than I can do myself with a phone. My family never liked doing videos so still photography is what I invested in.

If anyone else out there has Prestige Portraits, look for the Black Friday deal. Try to get 40% off. The markups are stiff.

No, but I make sure she goes in a nice dress.
