Proximity to large amounts of rodent feces can transmit hantavirus, which is often fatal (it's what Gene Hackman's wife, Betsy Arakawa, died of). Hantavirus is endemic to that region. It's not likely in university dorm rooms elsewhere, though.
Rabies is transmitted through saliva.
