Make sure she has seen "The Tinder Swindler," but as long as he doesn't ask her for money, I wouldn't worry too much about it. There is a good chance they are married, though.

I know a woman who fell deeply in love with a military guy living across the country. As he changed bases, she visited him all over the country and the world. She eventually cheated on him and he probably cheated on her (I'm guessing), but they did have a real and intense relationship.

Eh we disagree. If OP is so concerned she should have a conversation with her friend. She was only seeing the first guy for a couple of months. She's still with the second one, although they have been off and on. She has met some of his family.
Idk, it just seems so very strange that the situations were so similar. It just made me wonder if this is some sort of common scam on these dating apps..? Has anyone ever heard of something like that?
Also, any pointers on how to research someone online if they don’t have much of an online presence?

Why is this funny? My spouse is retired military and we have net worth just over $10 million. Our son who is an Ensign has close to $700,000 in one of his investment accounts.
There are actually many people who serve our country who have sizable portfolios. You’d be surprised.
