Good to know. So, who does? What’s the process?
Yes, I looked. All I’ve seen so far has been comments about “Congressional leadership” and articles that indicate that “Mike Johnson denied” the Jackson family’s request. As it is, I’m left with the sense that this was a partisan and capricious decision rather than adherence to a particular formula that most Americans and their elected representatives understand and might agree with.

But, why all the sudden love for Jesse Jackson? He was maligned by many people democrat and republican. The only thing anyone ever heard about Jesse Jackson in recent memory was because his son, who has the same name, was caught up in campaign fraud as a congressman.
American education system is truly broken if this is all you know about this man.
DP. Seriously? Stop with the hero worship. Jackson was an expert self-aggrandizer, in addition to being controversial and divisive.![]()
Flags flew half staff for Kirk, that fat faced snake in the grass
You can have your heroes and we'll keep ours
I don't expect MAGA to agree who i choose to be my heroes
As far as im concerned, there should be a monument for the Capitol police officers who were attacked by you J6ers since they defended the Constitution, but you prefer the shaman J6er
How does the pp you respond to suddenly become a maga rioter? You are a loon. Plenty of people on the left and in the civil rights mvmt had issues with Jesse Jackson.

With many of us it’s not “sudden”. I’m (OP) a 3rd generation DC native. I remember programs like PUSH, Operation Breadbasket, the Rainbow Coalition and admiration for his political activism. I remember proudly exclaiming: “I am somebody “ when Rev Jackson came to speak to students at my high school.
tldr: Don’t assume that “anyone” shares your experiences, your viewpoints, or your limitations.
NP. I suggest you take your own advice.

To add: My post wasn’t intended to be about whether or not Rev Jackson should lie in honor at the Capitol— although I, personally, think that he should , but rather how partisan gatekeeping overshadows opportunities to honor citizens who have contributed their lives to the social and political fabric of our nation. I’m sure I wouldn’t agree with all of any one person’s choices, but I also had no idea that such decisions were (solely?) up to the Speaker of the House.

I never knew that it was up to the Speaker of the House to decide who gets to lie in honor at the Capitol. This is not something that I would have thought twice about under a different, less partisan administration — that doesn’t even attempt to represent We The People. I’m somewhat surprised to learn that this honor wasn’t granted to Dick Cheney. Mike Johnson is building an interesting legacy for himself.

Dick Cheney was denied because he and Liz came out strongly against Trump. Mike Johnson was serving Trump with that decision.
This. Johnson puts on kneepads every time he enters the Oval Office.
