I wouldn't say head and shoulders above UMN for engineering but agree UIUC is better.

If you apply early, you can find out if kid got merit and into honors at UMN in October.

My son had UMN high in his list and ended up going to Pitt. He is a CS/Data science major.

He really liked both. On our tour of UMN, we noticed that most people were from Minnesota or rural Wisconsin (expected and nothing wrong with that). Our tour guide made a big deal that we live in NY state and how rare what was. Pitt has lots of kids from various cities.

Hockey seems super fun at UMN. The cities are similar in some ways. I like Minneapolis, but it did seem to have much more of a homeless issue than Pittsburgh (of course it is an issue everywhere). I took the train with my son to a basketball game in downtown Minneapolis, and I hate to say there were moments where I didn’t feel safe. I have gone to Pitt many times over the last few years and I always feel safe (of course you need to be careful). Pittsburgh is a really great medium city.

Academically, they seem comparable in many ways. UMN maybe has more of a traditional campus vibe even though it is close to the city. Pitt is more expensive. My son got no merit at Pitt. He got about $15000 merit per year at UMN.

My son loves Pitt, but says he thinks he would have been happy at UMN too. Both good choices!
