+3 for anything by Claire Foster and +1 for 84 Charing Cross Road, which is like a giant hug. Went back to my goodreads and sorted by pages (who knew this was possible) and also recommending these:
Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton
Not a River by Selva Almada
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
Shy by Max Porter
Up the Junction by Nell Dunn
Kick the Latch by Kathryn Scanlan
Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss

+1

Also O Caldonia by Elspeth Barker

+2. Love both of those.

Margaret the First, based on the real Margaret Cavendish, is also good.

I posted this in a separate thread and got zero responses, which is surprising considering this is a parenting board, but The End We Start From is a very short, lyrical, unnervingly beautiful read about new motherhood during some unnamed end times. Really amazing, unique book. Haven't seen the movie so can't vouch for that but the book is incredible.

Didn't everyone read this in junior high school? I know I did. But it's a classic.

Another good one is The Children's Story. Kind of pertinent to current circumstances. https://www.arvindguptatoys.com/arvindgupta/tcs.pdf

Anonymous wrote:Have you ever read Different Seasons by Stephen King? Four novellas. All good. Three of them were made into excellent movies (Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me being two. Apt Pupil is the third).

I just came on here to recommend Stephen King's short stories!

He has a bunch of them compiled but you could always read some now and some later - they're generally all independent of each other although some do contain characters from other books.

He has an amazing way of drawing you into a short story immediately, which I love.

Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M. Valente
