Both at ivy/elite schools, talked to professors, asked upper-classmen, got positions that way. By sophomore year had professors and others advising which programs to apply for, department sends out info to declared majors on opportunities, and again upper-classmen connections giving advice.
No family help because family is not in their area of interest.

Ivies, Stanford Duke, even UVA have these programs. They are competitive, not everyone gets funded, varies by school
