I’m encouraging my freshman to get a normal job this summer that pays.

I have a senior that did absolutely nothing freshman summer and has landed 3 six figure jobs before graduation. Just wanted to ease parents from feeling like they need to have all the things from the jump of freshman admission. Let the kids breathe.

My high school senior has an internship. I don't think it is too early for freshman year.

This. This is how my UVA kid got their first unpaid internship. That led to paid internships for the next two years. The last was a Senate aide position.

I had no idea this was possible. My DC did unpaid research last summer at a hospital and if they don’t find a paid internship for this summer then they plan to return there. Something for them to look into.

Look into it but it's not always as simple as just getting paid for an unpaid internship. My DD's college has a fund for this but you have to show the need for the funding, e.g. if you have to pay for housing because you can't live at home.

DS is a freshman and he has a job lined up. Trying to get an full summer internship but isn't too concerned. He has asked me to see if he can get a short (a week) internship by calling a friend.
