I wouldn't have thought of it, but absolutely would ask for an extension (and get the person to email you a "yes").

If that wasn't possible, I would skip DH's family thing and wouldn't think twice about it

Call the spa see if you can pre-pay for a treatment and schedule it a week or so out

skip dh's family event. it's fine. and if it's not fine with them, they are tiresome people so who cares.

the family thing. honestly a lot of time in laws like it if the spouse doesn't show up. it can be fun to have your child or sibling there without the spouse. it changes the dynamic.

second choice would be work.

third choice would be to call spa and beg for extension.
