But it would be dumb to cut off the interview process if he doesn't have something solid in hand.

+1 OP this is frustrating but your hardship isn't their problem. Remember that. DH had an interview process that got extended for other reasons so he kept looking for other jobs.

This 13 rounds of interview is crazy but isn't preventing him from anything else, is it? Has he turned down something else for this?

I did 9 rounds including a trip to the other coast to land mine. On the 10th call I didn’t know I was going to get the job. I thought is was yet another interview based on how the conversation was going. But it came through. I’m so glad I didn’t mail it in when I wanted to. Chin up OP. Tell your husband to hang in there and ensure that he shows up well every time - he is probably a finalist candidate and every interaction matters!

I'm sorry, OP, I know how stressful this is. The job market is horrible. My husband lost his job in August as well. After lots of multiple round interviews and no offers, he finally landed a job last month. His current job was a 5 round interview. The job itself is a significant paycut and the job security is questionable, but, he likes the job itself and he's currently employed! He will continue to job search while working.

I really hope this comes through for your husband, it's demoralizing to go through so many rounds only to be rejected, but tell him to keep applying and interviewing elsewhere. It's a numbers game.

Anything more than 3 rounds of interviews is highly unusual and signals a dysfunctional work environment. So even if he gets the position, keep interviewing, unless he likes working for disorganized companies. Last thing, when they ask you to do labs and work samples, they are probably in a bind and want you to solve one of their production issues for free. They should know by now if they wanted to hire him. I understand it’s a tough market, but direct more energy into other positions.

By time you reach end over 99 percent of applicants are gone. My brother joked only an unemployed person has time to complete process.

That job I got and I applied Mid Nov and got offer early March. Almost 4 months. I was not a back up candidate. In end I was only one who got till end of process. I spend around 200 hours begining to end on interview process.

Sounds a lot but over four months and I had a lot of other jobs in mix. And I had a consulting gig.

I found out after hiring they get 1,000 to 2,000 applicants per job and they use this to weed out the applicants.

But if I was working full time would have gave up. So if husband has time this is good news.

Bar raiser?
Team fit?

bar raiser is to prove you are more qualified then person you are replacing and everyone in department. Team fit is the team interviews you to see if a fit to the culture.

My job was Get it done type job, think deeper, never settle, type A hard charging who at same time is fun and cool and easy to get along with but when stuff needs to be done the type that can work like a dog and pump it out quick and right. 10x worker types you know who can do the work of 10 medicore average folks by being quick, smart and automating things.

Was not an age thing. More an energy thing which I have in spades. And bar raiser well I raise the bar was great. But took a lot of digging to see who all the ex employees and current employees in area were on LinkedIN, what they do, and show what skills I have better than them. Was time consuming.

Good luck, OP!

That’s a lot of interviews. But hopefully he’ll get the job and it’ll be a great fit.

It might be the lack of urgency for the role, restructuring, budget, the list goes on.

Do not focus on that job—keep looking and consider taking whatever he can get in the meantime, as others suggested.

Holy Cow. That is really crazy. Last couple I worked at would do this type of stuff. It was like, but wait, there's more! We'd have folks on site all day for entry level positions and the company was still asking for college transcripts with minimum GPA for folks with 20 years experience. Come on!

Place I'm at today from first contact to on-site interview was about 4 weeks. I had two phone screens before the on-site interview and then had an offer less than 2 weeks after the on-site. On-site was a morning with 3 groups of 2 folks each.

One time I had multiple long interviews for a job and finally told them it was enough. They offered the job, I accepted, but it wasn't a good fit for me. I realized later that they weren't sure about me being a fit and in hindsight I should have not accepted the job. It wasn't the job for me. I had other options that I should have pursued.

13 interviews is crazy. That employer has serious problems. But he needs a job. So keep interviewing and hopefully he has other options in the works.

This job market sucks, period. My DH has been through similar, only to be told that recruitment is paused/they're hiring no one. This has happened multiple times.

The last time I got hired, my first day was 4 months after my application. So, while 13 interviews is a lot, the overall timeframe is not unheard of at all.

Hopefully he has multiple irons n the fire and is still applying other places. Good luck, it’s rough out there.
