I definitely know someone who took Geometry and Algebra 2 concurrently sophomore year in MCPS, due to private school until 8th. She was very successful with the concurrent courses.

You mentioned wanting challenging physics. Does your HS offer AP Physics C? Not all of them do, unfortunately. Another disadvantage is that most MCPS students who are taking AP Physics C have probably already completed one full year of calculus. AP Physics C can be taken with first year calculus concurrently (I did this in 1992, with success), but I’m not sure how often this happens in MCPS.

Thanks for this! It does seem like a good option. I am going to try to confirm with MCPS admin that this option is still available.

My son was in this scenario a few years ago. He took Algebra 1 in 9th and hon. Geometry over the summer. It was right post Covid and his high school (Churchill) had it at the school with one of their own teachers. Yes, it was only a summer, but it was over 3 hours a day, so they certainly put in the hours. I can’t comment on the current state of summer school, but it was a great option a few years ago. He then did Hon. Alg 2 in 10th with no issues.

Going to MCPS for HS. I was going to email her registration card in next week, is there an option to do Algebra over the summer? How involved is it? Then do Geometry in 9th?
Or is the better plan Geometry between 9th-10th?

There is no way you can learn a year of math in a couple of weeks.

So why are people saying do it over the summer ?

Because you either have to double up in classes or summer to advance.

You can double up during the school year. That is a ugh better option.

Is that allowed? I'm not sure how you could take geometry concurrently with algebra 1 since it's a pre-req.

Other PPs were right, the two best options are geometry over the summer or double math in 10th grade. Either option is fine - you know your kid best and know how they'd handle a really fast paced summer geometry course.

I don't think MCPS Allows concurrent Alg 1 and Geo.
Either study Geo privately and then finish up for credit over summer, or double up Geo and Alg 2 in 10th.

If private school was teaching a solid foundation of prealgebra with pregeometry (unlike what MCPS does), it should be easy to learn geo privately with Khan/IXL/Alcumus online or RSM/AoPS class
