Hit post too soon.

OP, are you Latina? I grew up always being underdressed at my own birthday parties because the Latina girls would come dressed to the nines, haha! I don't remember it bothering me. I just thought their dresses were pretty but was perfectly happy to be comfy in my shorts and sneakers rather than having to worry about keeping my dress and shoes clean!

I guess I’ll be the odd one out and admit that I’d be a bit dismayed if another kid showed up to my daughter’s bday party in a princess outfit.

My daughters love princess dresses but I’ve made them change when going to someone else’s party - it’s the bday kid’s time to dress up unless a dress code specified IMO

+1 don't beat your self up or burden your daughter.

The other girl would have found something else to be mean and exclusionary about if not this.

Definitely. Sad to say but this kind of behavior starts very early in girls.

Anonymous wrote:Please forgive my ignorance in advance, but, what is the difference between a ballet dress with sparkles and a Disney (TM) princess dress?

Ballet dresses are usually just a leotard with a short flutter skirt. Disney princess dresses are longer and look more like ball gowns. They are often a looser fit.

Sorry, OP. These things can be nuanced and tough!

This is ridiculous. Unless she was told directly what her daughter should wear, she should not have to guess. Good god, it wasn’t a wedding

+1
"Overshadow the birthday girl?" LOL. They are children. OP's daughter did nothing wrong. The other girl is being a brat. They'll all get over it.
