Dude, that word is in everyone's vocabulary. It's not in regular use for everyone, but everyone older than ten knows that word. It's in there, whether you regularly let it out of your mouth or not.
I totally agree with the decision to fire her, and I have compassion for her. My brain messes with word combinations all the time (thanks, autism!), and I've nearly landed on some offensive af combinations more than once. I don't use that word deliberately, ever, and I'm still terrified that my goofy brain is going to oops and let one fly despite my best intentions.
What she's claiming is possible. It's not enough to exonerate her; she deserves to be fired because you have to be held to a higher standard if you're speaking in public/on tv. I'm not sure she deserves to be typecast as an outright racist or someone deliberately trying to be hateful. Maybe she is and she's just lying. But I could see myself in her shoes, so I'll grant her some grace. Off the air, of course.
