Cutting is 1/2 from what they are getting now. Other than providing institutionalized babysitting, what are we getting from MCPS??

State law doesn't allow that. The maintenance of effort law says per pupil spending is never allowed to be less than the previous year.

The capital budget isn't free. Debt service comes from the operating budget. Like you're running up credit card debt and making bigger and bigger monthly payments on it, never paying it down. That debt service crowds out operating budget capacity.

This is the result of welcoming illegal immigration.

I want liberal policies but want the politicians in charge to be responsible money managers. And they aren't. Leggett was not perfect but he was so much better than this clown car.

Moco basically has all the problems of a declining Western European democracy (no economic growth, declining youth population, lots of illegal immigration) without the European social safety net. Don’t expect it to get any better.

Just don't. That's a maliciously false binary. There are other places both MCPS and county government to either reduce costs (hey Green Bank!) or restructure compensation/benefits. But leaders are too lazy or too chicken to do the work.

You’re getting educated children. Which hopefully reduces the chance that they join the Trump cult.

LOL. You have a low bar.

Elrich is seeking feedback for how taxpayer money should be spent for FY27.

This is a good opportunity to let Council know that MCPS funding should not be increased. This way it will be harder for MCPS to implement the inequitable regional model should it get passed.

From the press release:

The County is in the early stages of formulating the FY27 operating budget. County Executive Elrich is required to submit a recommended budget to the County Council by Monday, March 16, 2026. The Council will then have two months to review the budget. It must adopt a final budget no later than June 1. The FY27 operating budget will go into effect on July 1.

“I urge every resident to participate in these discussions; your feedback shapes our future,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “We host these community conversations to garner input and feedback on how tax dollars are spent. We gain valuable insights from these conversations that help guide our decisions and priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. The budget reflects our community’s goals and values. With one forum in each of the five regions of the County, along with conversations conducted in multiple languages, there are multiple opportunities to participate and be heard.”

Spending should be requirements driven. WTF? MCPS budget should be cut to 1/2. They are not teaching kids anyway so why waste funds?

Hah, the casino revenue thing was a scam to be able to spend more on projects otehr than schools.

The claim was that gambling revenues woudl go to schools. They do, but then they just reduced the amount of money going ot schools from the general budget pot accordingly, and instead used that money on other projects.

That works for a few years. The school board sees additional funds in the general fund and asks for more funding. Any school board will always ask for increases because schools can always do more. Whether that more is beneficial to the students isn't asked.
