Try The Village School in Arlington. Their learning model caters to boys who have a natural tendency and need to move and so are labeled “ADHD”. Their school has freedom of movement and 2 hours of play.

Agree with other posters mentioning McLean School. Been a game changer for my son with a similar profile. He's very social and outgoing, so I worried about the small size, but it's been great for him. Academically he's finally getting what he needs.

DCTAG covers up to $10k (just increased this year to $15k — first increase in decades) of the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. That amount, even the increased amount, does not give DC residents in-state tuition at many schools. It doesn’t come anywhere close to closing the gap at UVA, for example.

We just switched from a different private to McLean for our child with ADHD and dyscalculia. It has been an incredible experience and the best part is, when she tries to slide under the radar, she gets called out every time and it really helps to keep her on track. We only regret not having sent her sooner. After a couple of weeks settling in, she is like a different child and is much more outgoing.

You seem hung up on extended time for assignments, but OP didn’t mention that. I don’t know about public, but very few privates will give extended time on assignments, only in-class assessments. But I also don’t know many students who need extended time on assignments (I have a dyslexic kid myself so I have a fairly wide set of acquaintances and friends with kids who have a range of diagnoses and have a range of accommodations). I don’t know *any* students who get that accommodation, and I only know a couple who asked for and were denied (and are managing just fine without it).

Like any student, if a kid with accommodations needs the occasional extension on an assignment, most teachers are willing to grant that if the kid has clearly shown they have been working on it (not blowing it off and asking for more time at the last minute).

Have you spoken with parents at Waldorf? I’ve known a couple of families with kids with ADHD and executive functioning challenges- the kids had real struggles with getting accommodations put into practice at Waldorf. I’m sure that kids have great experiences there - just something for you to dig into if it becomes a strong contender.
