Many CU students ski at Eldora. They are not doing the I-70 drive. Eldora is <40 min.

Honestly I have rarely, if ever, smelled weed in Boulder and I spend a bit of time there. There's far more weed smell on the streets of both DC and Manhattan.

The poster obsessed with weed needs to let it go. It's prevalent in many states and is no more common at CU than on any other college campus.

CU

I would go to CU Boulder over any mid-west (eg Purdue) or NE schools.

The cold cloudy weather in those areas compared to mountains and sunshine in Colorado make it very attractive..

If your son thinks they might want to stay in the Denver area or mountain west than CU Boulder is a great choice. The Leeds business school will be more difficult to get into than other programs as a direct admit. Two of my kids studied at Boulder very recently as non-degree students in the sciences (physics and CS) and both had a great experience with rigorous classes and involved & accessible professors.

I’ve been to Boulder. Overpriced & pretentious. Much preferred U of Kansas & U of Oklahoma.

Not sure the list of safeties are really safeties. I know a handful of kids who got into UM that did not get into UIUC and Wisconsin.

USC and UM applicants need safety schools, too.

Very easy to get into! Even C students. Great town and fun college experience. Boulder is expensive and rents are high.

I went to CU Boulder and have family in Boulder, and I smell pot in and around DC far more than I ever did there. The way Colorado legalized marijuana was really smart. It's like alcohol there -- something people do in the privacy of their homes, and that you can buy easily from a legitimate, regulated business. Most marijuana shops in Colorado are cleaner and better run than your average Whole Foods.

Also marijuana use on campus was no more than what you'd find at any university. I knew more, and heavier, pot users at my T10 law school than I did at CU (where I was an honors students who worked part time and lived off campus the last 3 years). I'm sure there are heavy pot users at CU, but I didn't run into many in my circles.

It's a big school and yes there are plenty of rich kids from the coasts there (some of these kids are the biggest druggies, in part because they have more money). CU is the state flagship and also attracts a lot of UMC kids from throughout the state, and while not as well regarded as Michigan or USC, it has fantastic faculty.

The business school is particularly preppy, IME.

People do tend to be pretty outdoorsy though. But you don't have to be like some extreme athlete. It was nice being able to easily go hiking or to always be able to find friends to go skiing with on the weekends. The campus is beautiful. I found Boulder pretty tedious by the time I left (it's definitely a bubble) but that's true of a lot of college towns. Town culture is similar to Berkeley or Santa Clara, if you are familiar with those places.

Why look at Boulder with those schools? It's large, but that's where the similarities end. If they want backups to USC and UM, look at Wisconsin, UIUC, UGA, Miami & the UC schools.
