Real country people- not some K lobbyist retirees playing homesteader in rich as hell Rappahannock- will shoot dogs all day long because they harass, harm and kill valuable items like chickens, game birds, crops, cows etc. Like, theyd expect their dog to get shot so they contain them before it happens. Or at least the decent people do.

Good point, but it depends where the dog is going. If he's going right up to the house lawn and pooping there among the curated plantings, it's not OK. If he's pooping in the bushes in a corner of the property that no one uses, eh.

You can’t shoot a dog just for being on your property even in Virginia.
Tell them you’ve noticed them on your property and you just wanted to let them know where the boundary is in case they werent sure.
A loose dog in the country is not worth worrying about.

On the positive side the dog will be protecting your property when you are not around.

Op or someone in their household is more likely to get shot by their gun than the dog. If you are so worked up, its best to send them a letter and leave out the shooting threat so you don't have all your neighbors against you

I had this same thought. We live on a golf course in a non-rural area and we get all sorts of poop. Deer, skunk, fox and who knows what else. For a property that isn't lived in full-time and kids aren't out playing in the fields after school, I would let it go. Though if it will make you feel better, make the cameras visible and put up clean up after your dog signs.

Tell them that you don’t want their dog on your property in a kind but firm way.
