By contrast my son grew 3 inches this year from 11-12.
That is a really early growth spurt for a boy! He will probably be an early developer/done growing young.
3 inches in a year is not a growth spurt. Between 2 and 3 is normal. My kids (12 yo boy and 9 yo girl) have grown 2-3 inches every year of their lives to date.

I don't remember when my daughter hit 5', but probably by 11 because she was 5'8" between 13 and 14 and never had a crazy spurt, she just always grew several inches per year. She was a head taller than most of her friends through elementary, so yes, I would say 5' at 11 is tall.
It's interesting because her and I are the exact same height, and I wasn't 5' until I was almost 14, but I grew 2" my first year of college.
My daughter is 5’0” now. She is 12 years old and in 7th grade. She is one of the shortest girls in the class. She hasn’t yet had her first period but many in her class, if not most, have.
5' at 12 isn't particularly short (being in 7th just makes it seem more dramatic)
My 12 year old 7th grader is 5' and just got her period (she's not the shortest kid but probably in the bottom 25%). From what I've read, that means will grow maybe 2 more inches. I'm surprised - I'm 5'2", but my husband is 5'11". I thought she'd be taller.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I grew almost a foot in… 7th grade? 8th grade? I forget which. By the end of that year I was 5’9”, just one inch shy of my eventual full-grown height of 5’10”.
What I remember most about that time is just being SO HUNGRY. Always. I’d eat two huge servings at dinner and polish off a sleeve of Oreos and then 20 mins later be hungry again. I was a total beanpole and just could not get enough calories.
So you were 4'9 in 7th grade and grew a foot in 8th? That seems highly unlikely. Are your parents tall? You must have been under the 10th percentile before the growth spurt.

People typically don't obsess over growth spurts in girls because, broadly speaking, girls aren't penalized for their heights the same way boys are.
BTW growth spurts function the same way for boys, too, though it's generally a little later, 13 to 15. Most children are completely done by 16. Those who grow significantly after thinking 2 inches generally start puberty later. It's not common to have huge growth sports in college despite what popular culture claims. Sidenote here, it's also common to give college athletes that extra quarter of an inch because it looks better on reports /
extra 1/4 inch - LOL - sometimes as bad as 2-3 inches especially near thresholds for certain positions - see diego pavia listed vs actual measurements at the combine
