FWIW I live outside of the DMV and your terminology is wrong for the private school in my city that I'm familiar with - they absolutely have a principal, and talk about their elementary school.
That’s great. This is a DC forum so I’m going to assume OP is talking about a DC area school, unless they want to say otherwise.

Their research software spit out the wrong information here — although honestly, with millions in the stock market, you probably could afford to give far more than you are willing to give. That’s ok. Just give what you want to, and don’t stress about it.

Well, I admit that I don’t know the fundraising lingo too well — because they never ask us for money and I avoid these people like the plague!
But otherwise I know all the fancy words.

Anyone who goes to a private school has gotten emails from the Director of Development.
Schools also do annual fundraising campaigns that go out to everyone, so it’s BS to say they’ve never asked you for money.

Really, we do not. Two cars from Carmax, no jewels, no vacation house, no trust or education trust or foundation or whatever people have. I work only part time so I can handle kids after school, so maybe that whet their appetite.

I can understand why OP is upset. I bet she’s a people-pleaser. Telling people no is hard when you have been programmed that way. No advice, but you’re okay right to be upset.
As a former private school teacher, I never knew who gave what. So this is between you and the admin. Don’t let it poison the nice experience you might be having with the faculty and staff.

Ok. I like this idea. Thank you. My husband is under the impression that we can just never respond but I am at the school much more often and it’s going to be too bizarre to never get back to them and it feels rude to me. But I am also hoping to hide my true feelings from these folks so maybe a well crafted email. Maybe I will ask them to explain why they thought this was possible for our family and if I find out I’ll post it.

What do you mean “ what to do.” You say no!
I’d write an email or go in person. You say I am not sure why you thought we could give at that level but we cannot. We have 5 children to put through private and college. We are saving for retirement. What we can do is donate 5k/10k per year while our children attend and enclose/ hand over a check.
If that is not acceptable you look for another school.
