Native Michigander here. For that time of year, I would definitely recommend flying. Storm systems can come in quickly and you don't want to find yourself in the middle of a white out in Ohio. Just fly and make it easy on your self. In other seasons, it's perfectly fine to drive.

For me, in DC with a kid a U Mich, it depends. A benefit of flying is that I can usually still do a day of work (and not take a leave day) as I can work at the airport and on the plane (for my role not workable in a car with someone or, of course, while driving). If I'm driving our with my DH, though, it's a nice time for (very) long chats. So for me really depends on how best to spend the time. If driving realistically results in another hotel night or a leave day, I tend to fly.

DC at UMich and DH family in Mich.

Our first consideration is cost. Second consideration is weather. We fly if tickets are about $200, drive if like $500. Try to avoid driving on the winter. PA Turnpike is miserable in the winter

We are also going that weekend—flying DCA to Detroit. I want everything to be as easy as possible, and an eight-hour drive each way for essentially a one-day visit sounds miserable.
