The government should just quit collecting taxes. The whole thing is a joke anyway. No enforcement agents means that no one will be checking if people are actually paying or not. Why force people to continue to work at the IRS in this situation?

Imagine of IRS had the same enforcement budget as ICE.

But in this admiration, they would probably shoot 1040EZ filters and ignore billionaire tax evaders.

Imagine masked armed IRS agents yanking people out of cars demanding receipts and documentation.

Congress doesn't care about their paychecks. They get 100x to 1000x as much in campaign donations and insider information and revolving for employment.

You think Rick Scott cares about his Senate salary?

I dont see what that has to do with what I posted. Pretty sure the lege is already funded so their staff will get paid regardless.

What is the status of the bills? I read that the House needs to approve the bills if they take DHS out, but the House is in recess until next Tuesday.

It’s not enough. Another crony doing the same thing is just as big of a problem.

I wish there were a rule that no one on Capitol Hill gets paid until a full budget is passed -- and a ban in retroactive pay for Capitol Hill if not passed on time. With a rule like that, they would develop focus and pass a budget on time.

That’s not what this is about. This is about doing their other job, i.e. checking the executive branch.

We won’t shut down if the administration does something more meaningful than shuffling the deck chairs with regard to ICE. Heads need to roll, metaphorically.

You need the House back to to vote on a modified bill, even if all they modify is lifting DHS out and no clear indication they’re willing to pass any modifications. This a mess.

and don't forget, another snowstorm may come through over the weekend!

Only 1-3 inches, and 40%. Like your husband.

Yeah, we are headed for a partial shutdown: (this is from a FedFam post on Facebook)

House action:
• The House has passed the final FY 2026 minibus covering Defense, Labor–HHS–Education, and Transportation–HUD (341–88).
• The House also passed the Homeland Security bill separately (220–207).
• These, plus the previously House-passed State/Foreign Operations (SFOPS) bill and the Financial Services bill, are now headed to the Senate.
Senate plans:
• The Senate aims to take up all six pending bills this week, even with potential schedule delays from a weekend snowstorm.
🧠 National Events Impacting Funding Talks
Over the weekend, the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis man, Alex Pretti, by federal immigration agents significantly affected the politics around the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill. Pretti was shot during a confrontation in Minneapolis amid immigration enforcement activity; video and public reaction have intensified scrutiny of federal agents.
Political response and appropriations fallout:
• Senate Democrats have pledged to oppose the DHS appropriations bill in its current form, citing the shooting and demanding reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) funding and oversight.
• Democratic opposition centers on conditions attached to federal immigration enforcement funding, particularly for ICE.
• This could complicate or slow Senate approval of the broader appropriations package if DHS remains included without changes, increasing the risk of a partial shutdown as the deadline approaches.
This political dynamic is now part of the negotiations as the Senate starts floor action this week.
🟦 Agency Impact Snapshot
Already done (awaiting the President’s signature):
✔ Agencies funded by the Commerce–Justice–Science, Energy–Water, and Interior–Environment minibus
Senate action needed this week:
• DoD
• HHS, Education, Labor
• DOT
• DHS (contentious in light of Minneapolis events)
• State Department & USAID (SFOPS)
• Treasury, IRS, SSA, OPM, GSA, SBA (Financial Services)
🔎 Bottom Line
A major national incident has now become part of the appropriations story. Discussions over DHS funding and immigration enforcement are influencing Senate willingness to move a large funding package and may affect how or whether DHS stays in that package as the CR deadline looms.
We’ll keep watching this closely and update you as votes happen and Senate floor strategy develops.

Probably lots of angry IRS folks if we shut down, filing season started today so it’s likely they’d all be declared excepted and have to work.
