What’s the difference of waitpool and waitlist?

Wait pool is for criteria based — there is not an [know] order they draw from when a spot opens

Wait list is for lottery based — the lower your number, the more likely to get in because it’s the order in which they offer open spots

What's criteria based? And lottery based?

95% map? Or 95% A. 99% is not even enough for map score.
97% math 95% languages arts. Straight As. So are you saying every child that got into a magnet program was in the 99th percentile?

Which programs did they apply for and get rejected from?

This. Kids who got into CES (which is really hard to earn the spot) receives enriched program (usually they also do Compact math, have family support + extracurriculars) goes on to Magnet MS with HIGH and advanced math with tutoring if necessary, and they are the 99%ers who gets accepted into the criteria based High School program.

It’s not fair for the kids who never had the chance to get enrichments between those years.

Nope.

They were already 99%ile before they went to CES, and HIGH and Advanced English is available at non Magnet MS anyway.

And it's not unfair to not be dropped in a HS class that the student isn't prepared for and is unwilling to do the work for, as evidenced by choosing not to do any of the multitude of free enrichment available before high school.

Not sure what delusion you’re living in. If your kid is academically qualified, but does not win the lottery at 9 or 12, they do NOT get the enrichment those in magnets do. & if their iq does not correlate to their ability to test exceptionally they won’t even be screened magnets.

Your kids can still get a very strong education and be prepared for high level college success even if they don’t attend these programs. Don’t feel bad if they don’t get in

Yes. That's why the are trying to grow admissions with regional programs.

Thanks for the explanation. Then who gets the first slots when there are spots open if placed in a waitpool?

If it's like the elementary and middle school wait pools, everyone in the waitpool has an equal random chance of getting each new slot.

It's not. ES and MS are random. HS application-based programs are not. That's why the have applications.

My kid never got into magnets but I did provide extra math outside of school.

My kid is at Blair without tutoring or prior magnets.

The waitpool is described in the letter as follows: “If your student was placed in the waitpool, your student will be reviewed for invitation to the program should a vacancy occur. When vacancies occur, all students in the waitpool will be reviewed.” I don’t think this process is “random”.

99% cut off for map M is 269. All kids I know got in are above 285 or 290.
Not sure about MAP R as all kids I know with a score of 250+ got rejected.
