ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. There is a large body of statutes, regulations, policies, and caselaw related to both those things. So sure, as long as the enforcement agency is abiding by those statutes and caselaw--and regulations and policies also abide by them--most people are fine.

So fine, in fact, that most of us know next to nothing about those statutes and that caselaw, so when these issues are front and center we don't have an information base to draw on. Some of us tackle the learning curve best we can. Some are bewildered, because even when the laws are applied fairly, there are often impacts on people that are painful to see.

There have been many programs over the years--going back to Reagan's amnesty program--that have allowed people who crossed the border without inspection to remain and even, ultimately, to become citizens. One such program, Keeping Families Together, was intact until January 24, 2025 when it was struck down by a Texas court. The new administration did not appeal that decision, of course. So it's not just about the laws, it's always in part about the policy goals of a particular administration. There is a lot less black and white than people assume based on the average person's knowledge of the system.

I have to wonder what your home country was, since you would be "happy" to return there. I'm guessing you have no fear of being profiled and possibly detained even though you have perfectly lawful status as a citizen. Or maybe you just have a ton of confidence. Currently, there is a bill to denaturalize citizens in case of fraud. That's a slippery slope, because it could over time lead to a situation in which naturalization means little or nothing in terms of assured rights and privileges, and the steady erosion of checks against the executive makes that even more alarming.

And currently the administration has HALTED all naturalization ceremonies, meaning there are thousands of people just like yourself who don't even have that measure of protection. The administration has halted asylum claims. It has halted most refugee programs. It has declared birthright citizenship invalid.

I don't think you can say "in concept" without considering the entire context within which enforcement is carried out.

I also have a hard time listening the European or Asian immigrants (or immigrants from non-Hispanic countries) talk about how they did things “the right way” when Europeans and others have a far easier ability to immigrate to the U.S. legally.

Exactly. It's a demand issue. Unless Trump goes after the business that hire them, nothing will change. But, no one wants to do that because businesses have deep pockets.

Several industries prop up and take advantage of low cost migrant labor, but the owners of construction companies aren’t the ones hiding in their houses afraid of getting snatched up by ICE.

Did you see the little 5 yr old that ICE took? The mom was telling ICE that she would take him, but ICE ignored her and took the kid. That pix will haunt me forever.

Well goody for you. I’m a (legal) immigrant too and I feel sick watching those thugs invade and terrorize people. It not only destroys families, communities and businesses, it also destroys ANY trust I once had in government or police/authority. And that won’t come back easily. There WAS a better way, that had been negotiated on a bipartisan basis in 2023/4 but was destroyed by Diaper Don. The goals of this current invasion are simply fear, destruction and cruelty. Shame on you

This is a tough issue. I think we should make it easier for people to come here who are contributing to the economy and are able to support themselves. It's not sustainable to allow whoever wants to come and have them immediately be dependent on welfare, housing subsidies, etc. when so many actual citizens are struggling. Not sure what the answer is.
