The seasonal labor stuff is all exempted to minimum wage. I think teenage employees might also be exempted? I know my teen did not make minimum working at their summer camp and I looked it up and they were clearly exempted. There’s actually a ton of exemptions.
I agree it will accelerate use of automation at grocery stores, fast food and retail but that’s already been happening, and the immigration crackdown will also accelerate it. There’s a reason why Japan has been at the foefrpnt of a lot of this stuff replacing human labor with automation. I’m not sure it’s a bad idea for retail and fast food stuff — it is actually much more efficient and you’re much more likely to get the right order, and the younger generation really prefers to do things that way anyway.

I don’t think this is the end of the world, but they should call it the Jeff Bezos Enrichment Act. It will accelerate the decline of brick and mortar businesses. On the other hand, I mostly shop online at this point, and think it would be a good idea to convert some existing retail like Montgomery mall into affordable housing.

We were paying $32 an hour in a rural Md county. We hired direct for adult CNA's to look after Mom.

CNA's are already earning well over minimum wages in Maryland and this was in a poor county.

R.I.P. MD businesses. Imagine having to pay some teenager the equivalent of a $52,000 per year salary to scoop ice cream, or pay that salary to a cashier in some bookstore who sits around 70% of the time.

Americans are and will be so massively overpaid. The American economy will collapse under this level of labor cost. I guess the college educated admin is going to need to make $200k/year soon just so there is enough gap between them vs the teenager pouring their coffee.

What a stupid idea. Hyper accelerate labor costs, which in the end do nothing except raise prices leading to no gains in purchasing power for min wage employees. All the increases in wages will do is raise prices and ruin everyone's savings. Why do Dems love throwing gas on the inflation fire?

You can always pay more taxes, as an option. to cover these absurd wages. Have you seen the McDonald on the pike? My understanding is that it is the sign of things to come. Order online. Order on apps. Pick up your food. Hire bare min. of people. More of this ahead due to these crazy min. wage policies.


I would expect even more automation or encouragement of paying people under the table.
