I concentrated in marketing, but in hindsight, should've done accounting. I pivoted to the finance side later, which better fits my personality and skill.

If you read this again, can you write what you did in marketing and why and how finance is a better fit (for you)?

I'm not a very social or creative person. I'm actually a numbers person, which is why I focused on market research. I ended up doing some marketing at a non profit after graduation (internship segued into a job). This was back in the 90s LOL. I liked it the first year, but I got bored really quickly. I was good at anything to do with computers and numbers, but didn't enjoy the creative part or the people interaction part, lol. I also worked trade shows, and I found interacting with people super draining.

I was much happier number crunching in front of a computer. Having an accounting/finance background also helped me segue into the IT department which is where I really flourished.

Actually, in hindsight, I should've majored in MIS, but I didn't have anyone to guide me.

Is MIS still offered at most colleges? It was (and could still be) a big thing in late 90s into at least 2010. Maybe it evolved into something else with another name?

My son is a freshman, economics major. Will likely end up as a Finance major and minor in economics. Or double with business information systems and still minor in economics.

Most kids at his school are finance and something else in the business school.

Don't do data science.

Why not, seems very employable entry level these days, especially if yiu know python or R.

A lot of entry level jobs are going away since AI can do the work. Decision making roles will always be there but if your job is to primarily develop/create the output, AI will take over and can actually do it faster and better.

What was the internship in and was job offer in same industry or same company?

Internship at an accounting firm doing tax accounting.

And yes, full time job offer is from the accounting firm where he had the internship.

Companies always seem to need these types, someone who starts out as an intern and hired by company. Is it a high turnover field?

No. One of the main reasons for doing an internship is the potential for a full time job offer from the firm. This is true across many fields, not specific to accounting.

How is accounting doing in the world of AI?

A good friend owns an accounting firm. No impact. Shortage of accountants actually.

Every organization in America -- for profit, non-profit, and governmental -- needs accountants, has always needed accountants, and will always need accountants.
