There’s a great school for her out there but I fear it isn’t the ones you are targeting, OP. Have you talked to the school’s college counselors about what they advise and what is realistic given the grades and scores?

27 ACT is great if her GPA is 3.09. With her GPA a comparable ACT score falls between 20-24. So she is on her marks. Maybe look for different schools and do the "reach" ones because you never know...

Does a lower gpa from a rigorous private school get compared to a higher gpa from an easier high school?

Not pp but yes the school sends information with their rigor, AP limits, etc. However, there are a lot of kids from rigorous privates out there with higher gpas. There’s a great school for her / it will work out.

It’s fine! People do it all the time.

3.09 gpa is also a limiting factor, even with TO.

App St? Why?
Miami of Ohio would be good, or Indiana or Kansas.

Have you looked at Miami of Ohio? Wonderful school with many kids from DC area with just OK scores. Take a look at it.

My kid was similar, slightly higher GPA (3.3); he applied test optional and was admitted everywhere she applied, and she ended up at SMU. Expand your list, she'll be fine. Maybe Miami of Ohio? Indiana; St. Joseph's; Loyola of Maryland, etc. My kid is doing great at college BTW. Good luck! You should also consider applying ED, and I agree UGA is probably out.

Sounds like she is testing near her ability with an 3.0. Add more schools to her list, and she will be fine. There are a ton of good schools out there!

OP, where do you think your child can actually succeed? Like have a decent GPA and get a job after? The goal should be to find a school that works for her. Is a big state school the right fit? What is her intended major or career path? Do the dream schools you mention do well in those fields? Will she have to take math and science to graduate from those schools and what is her plan to pass? I think a private college counselor or a real long talk with a school counselor who can show you Naviance is in order. There are all sorts of schools out there. If she wants a place with lots of sports and spirit that's fine but she should pick one where she can graduate.

Retake or take the SAT. Do LOTS of timed practice tests. Ideally actual ones.

Hire a tutor, if possible.

3.09 is low for high point thought the act is more inline. UNC Greensboro is an option.

Maybe she could go to community college and then transfer? Or High Point university could be a fit.

Another option is a gap year at a school that specializes in kids with ADHD, then apply to college.

1. You shouldn't have her looking at UGA. There's 0% chance she gets in with these numbers. (sorry but this is accurate)

2. Honestly I’m worried about Bama and TCU for you too. What else are you considering? She's going to need to think past big name schools and think about the adjacents IMO. Maybe something like UNC Wilmington or Greensboro? Or App State?
