The worst was that Chicago apartment building raid where approximately 300 federal agents, supported by Black Hawk helicopters and flashbang grenades, raided a large apartment building on the South Side around 1am. Residents—including children and U.S. citizens—were pulled from their beds in the middle of the night, zip-tied, and held outside or in vans for hours.

But if you're talking about using state and local law enforcement to round up undocumented people the way ICE does--in workplaces, at Target or Home Depot, on the street because they "look" foreign, on the street where they pull cars over because they're been driven by someone who looks foreign, in parking lots, etc. etc. etc., that is not the job of local or state LEO. That is the job of BP and ICE--local/state LEO are not authorized to do that kind of work. Can you be specific about what types of "illegals" exactly you mean?

I've been thinking about this for a long time. Here goes:
*start by dialing back the white supremacist/racist rhetoric
*treat people with dignity and humanity--they are not criminals in most cases unless they committed actual crimes or entered without being processed at the border
*get rid of the crazy daily quota imposed by Stephen Miller and develop a systematic plan for deporting people that is humane
*as was done under Obama, focus on deporting criminals, gang members, and recent border crossers first
*instead of hiring 10,000+ more ICE officers, hire more judges and staff to clear backlogs (faster fair trials mean quicker removals without long and costly detention)
*increase incentives for voluntary self-deportation (it's cheaper in the long run than putting people in detention)
*improve detention standards and reduce the need for detention for low-risk people by using tech like ankle monitors, check-ins, etc. that allow them to stay outside detention facilities while waiting for their trials
*get rid of the masks and para-military outfits (they frighten everyone and decrease community trust in the LE community)
*provide incentives to home countries to repatriate their citizens
This is just a start. By now most Americans agree that we should have a well-controlled border--they just don't like the draconian tactics currently being used to deport people.
