The MCPS schools are pretty good, and you have way more amenities in Maryland. At a minimum, you'd have a neighborhood pool (summer outdoor pool club) that you could join if you live in Maryland. (In all of upper NW DC, I believe that there is one outdoor public pool, and it has limited hours.)
If your child goes to high school in MCPS, there are a lot of way to participate in school sports against the 20+ other high schools in Montgomery County.
The commute really is not that different -- not enough to make up for the shortage of amenities in DC, in my humble opinion.
The private pool club point is wrong: Portions of CCDC, nearly all of Barnaby Woods, and all of Hawthorne are in-bounds for the Rock Creek Pool Club.
The pool itself is in MoCo, but DC families in these WOTP neighborhoods and in Colonial Village are eligible for membership and are not left with the “one outdoor public pool” in “all of upper NW” as their sole pool option.

Much of it had to do with the inventory that was available at our price point when we purchased.
We wanted to be able to walk to metro, stores, restaurants, etc., which meant the house needed to be reasonably close to downtown Bethesda, CC MD close to Upper CT Avenue or CC DC.
We ended up in CC DC and have generally been happy with the choice. Close to FH metro, shops on CT Avenue, etc. FH was a big draw for us when we bought in the early 2000s, so it's been depressing how much FH has declined since then...let's hope the TJ, Total Wine et al signify a rebirth.
Sent kids all through DCPS and both are at top 20 colleges. If we had been thinking more about colleges back when we bought, we probably would have given more consideration to VA just because they have better in state options compared to MD.
DC doesn’t have a university. Correct me if I am wrong, but DC residents qualify for in state tuition in VA and MD
